CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Projects carried out by Christopher Sale R.I.B.A. in a senior capacity as an Associate Partner in a large London Practice.

Debenhams Ipswich. An urban redevelopment project of building a new department store, supermarket restaurants and offices of some 20,000 square meters. The existing store was retained during the construction with temporary fire escape staircases and exists to maintain safety and the rebuilding was carried out in two phases.

There were six escalators and six lifts with a full range of fire fighting equipment, smoke extracts, fire shutters and emergency escape staircases. The project also involved retaining part of a Listed façade and, with two basement levels, parts of the adjoining buildings had to be underpinned and sheet piled. The building was constructed with a reinforced concrete frame, a pan and beam floor with a part space frame roof. Electrical and mechanical services with comfort cooling were integrated into the building fabric.

The current valuation of this project would be in the region of £27m.
